Meraki looks pretty neat.

From their description (obviously positive it's their words):

Meraki makes it easy for you to spread affordable broadband access throughout your community. Simply plug in a few Meraki repeaters to power, connect one or more of them to broadband connections, and the system will take care of providing access to everyone. You can start with a dozen people in your neighborhood and keep building until you've reached everyone in town.

And, they've got solar powered repeaters too.

It's kind of a non-issue for me at my current place in the suburbs, but I could see getting together a few other charitably-minded people with decent connections to do this once I move into Philly later this year (and “competing”–by way of, “free with us, please attach your own home connection and use our wireless when you're not home–with the for-pay, though admirably cheap, service that the city contracted out to Earthlink). Obviously, I could just set up base stations, larger gain antennae, and repeaters myself, but using Meraki gear would make it easier to convince my neighbors who won't be, by and large, dorks, but probably will have decent bandwidth.
