I have returned.

Some quick notes:

  • Columbus is very… midwestern. Cemented my belief that I don't need to go back there. Probably not even to Chicago, which was on the “maybe live there” list at some point. Nothing personal, , but I was in a pretty shithole neighborhood (on 161, in the total strip mall section), so I didn't exactly stick around on the weekends.

  • Long-term stay hotels are a mysterious combination of trailer park and college dormitory. I'll let you stew on that one for a bit before I provide some examples.
  • Windows XP can't cope with the concept of multiple APs with the same SSID. It keeps hopping to the next one before it gets a DHCP response. I've heard mumblings that this is a known bug, and that it's fixed, but the MS site I saw (don't recall the url off-hand) said it was fixed in SP1, which the work-provided laptop is already running. Anyone have a CLEAR fix for this (ie, a URL at Microsoft containing a patch I should download and install to fix it)? It's mostly a point of curiosity at this point… the multiple-AP site was the hotel. Yes, I was damn fool enough not to scrounge up a Knoppix CD, which probably would have worked fine… except that I couldn't have gotten into work (Cisco VPN using RSA SecurID and Netware authentication; not gonna happen under anything but Windows).

That's about it for now…
