Around clicking “submit” on jobcircle a lot and speaking with recruiters yesterday, I cleaned up the eclipsed.net “datacenter” (read, spare bedroom in my apartment) a bit. In the process, I discovered three computers I'd forgotten I owned: a PowerMac 6500 from who-knows-where that I trucked up to Wasabi when I interned there to use as a workstation; a 1 RU box from freeme.com (don't bother; they
went out of business, which is why their 1 RU systems are running around), and a PowerMac G3.
So I guess I'll be offloading some services from grappa, the firewall/workstation box, (like, say, DNS) in preparation for its being the firewall/file server box (with a couple of 750 GB RAID 5 LUNs of SATA disk). Maybe setting up my Postfix (amavisd SpamAssassin clamav) SMTP filter here at home too to take some load off the mail/web server. That accounts for the G3 and the 6500. The colo box will be a mirror of the SMTP filter and the web stuff and actually get colo'ed. The massive disk and paying for colo comes, obviously, after I'm employed again. Oh, that and getting a serverclass motherboard for grappa and a case for grappa's motherboard (for the replacement workstation).

“HVAC system”, monitors (notably, one for the SGI, a 21″ Dell this desk probably can't suppor the weight of, and a page-view b&w Apple), whiteboard, some Swarthmore kid's desk chair stored here for the summer. |
